AFTER talks lasting for several hours, the National Council for the Omnibus Industry failed last week to agree on a claim for a pay increase of about El a week for some 100.000 bus workers employed by private companies and B.T.C.-controlled undertakings in the provinces.

The matter was referred to a joint conciliation committee of the council, who will report back to a further full meeting.

BECCOLS PLANT ACQUIRED

THE buildings and plant lately occupied by Beccols (1952), Ltd., have been purchased by Houlton Products (Lanes), Ltd., Norris Road, Chequerbent, near Bolton. The chairman and managing director is Mr. M. F. Edwards.

Mr. G. Nichols has been appointed designer and works manager. Goods bodywork and luxury coaches with 14 to 41 seats will be built

EAST KENT TRYING NEW BUSES

INan attempt to offset the rise in operating costs, the East Kent Road Car Co., Ltd., are experimenting with two new types of double-deck bus.

At present, a Daimler 61-seater, weighing nearly 1 ton less than a conventional double-decker, is being tried out on the undulating route between Canterbury and Whitstable.

This will be followed by the rearengined Leyland 61-seater described in The Commercial Motor on October 8.
