L'ACED with an estimated deficit of I more than £107,000 at the end of the current financial year, Edinburgh Transport Department is to seek a further increase in fares. Fares were Last raised on October 17. Higher wages will cost the department £134,550 in a full year.
It is proposed to reduce the stages covered by the 3d. fare from six to four. It is estimated that this alone would produce an extra £132,972 a year.
BLACKPOOL SEEKS INCREASE
A PPLICATION has been made to the North Western Licensing Authority by Blackpool Corporation for increases in certain fares.
The main proposals are that workmen's returns be issued at a cost of 1 A times the single fare to the nearest Id. above; 50 per cent, increase in the prices of scholars' books of tickets; 25 per cent. advance in contracts; and that free travel for transport employees. with certain exceptions, be withdrawn.
Lytham St. Annes Transport Department is affected by the proposals on services jointly operated with Blackpool.
ROCHDALE MAY RAISE FARES
THE general manager of Rochdale Transport Department has been asked by the transport committee to suggest means for wiping out estimated deficits on the undertaking. including possible increases in fares, following the recent wage award. The estimated deficit at March next year is p7.849. At March, 1956, it is expected to be i61.849.
BIGGER GOODS VEHICLES SOON
NEW Construction and Use Regulations, authorizing the production of bigger goods vehicles, are expected to he made soon, the Minister of Transport said last week.
He also hoped to be able, soon after the Christmas recess, to make an announcement about the extended road programme.
The proposals concerning the weights and dimensions of vehicles were published in The Commercial Motor on September 17.
HIRE-PURCHASE FOR OPERATORS
TO assist operators who wish to purchase at auctions or by means of private treaty. E. Karlin and Sons, Ltd., 171 Queens Gate, London, S.W.7, have introduced a special hire-purchase facility.
The service provides for financing two-thirds of professional valuation, the sum advanced being repayable in monthly instalments up to two years. The charge is 3 per cent. flat commission on the purchase price, plus 7i per cent. on the amount advanced.
