THE view that the trolleybus with 1 its inherent flexibility was a menace in modern traffic conditions was expressed by Mr. J. C. Clemson, one of five senior inspectors with Wolverhampton Corporation Transport, last week. He was addressing the Birmingham centre of the Institute of Traffic Administration.
The same meeting was also addressed by Mr. S. Farrell, a traffic inspector with the Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Co. Ltd., both men speaking on the subject of the traffic inspector; Mr. Clemson also dealt with the organization of the inspectorate.
Mr. Clemson blamed the trolleybus —now fast disappearing from the streets of Wolverhampton—for many of his headaches. The town was very severely congested by heavy traffic filtering into it from uncompleted motorways and a by-pass in the area. Motor buses could be turned short of the destination or diverted in an attempt to restore services, but not trolleybuses.
The general public were not the most co-operative of people when it came to waiting for buses to arrive, said Mr. Clemson. If a bus was turned only occasionally this satisfied the waiting public in that they knew they were being considered.
Speaking of the traffic inspector's duties, which included the checking of a vehicle as well as the crews operating it, Mr. Farrell pointed out that this included checking the interior advertisements for any defects; also seat covers torn and noting the general cleanliness of the vehicle. After leaving the bus, the rear advertisements were noted, and also the exhaust for black smoke.
Park Royal Coaches: Further to our announcement last week that 10 of the new Park Royal-bodied Viking coaches had been ordered by Birmingham Coach Sales Ltd., Park Royal Vehicles Ltd. has announced that a number of the new coaches, described in The Commercial Motor, December 10, will be ready for delivery from the established coach dealer organization between Easter and Whitsuntide next year.
Buses for Swindon: Tenders for the supply of three double-deck and three single-deck buses are to be invited by Swindon Corporation Transport.
