DEPLORABLE sanitary conditions at laybys on busy highways have directed the attention of some local authorities to the Problems caused, especially during the summer months, by the new tribe of roadside sleepers. There have always been those who have needed a nap in the course of their journeys, but a serious nuisance now arises from the activities of car or van owners who perhaps spend days al the seaside, returning each night to sleep in their vehicles on their favourite layby or verge.
In some areas thoughts are being directed to possible forms of control, but action has been taken at certain spots by the establishment of either semipermanent or mobile toilet facilities.
At the Association of Public Health Inspectors' exhibition this autumn, Glover. Webb and Liversidge Ltd. displayed the newest type of Marlborough toilet trailer, a practical unit that has been employed at different points during the past few months. Although reasonable in price its extra facilities include washbasins with hot water supply, these apparently being greatly appreciated by itinerant holidaymakers who often set about having a shave on the spot, This design can he used without any connection to mains services, accommodating 300-600 persons before the refilling of the water tank or the emptying of the effluent tank is necessary. The trailers can be towed to the site with the water tank full and away from the site with the effluent tank full, or can be serviced on the spot by the appropriate municipal appliances.
