RECRUITMENT of schoolleavers to become motor vehicle apprentices has reached its highest level since 1970, according to figures issued by the Road Transport Industry Training Board.
Figures include 3,900 teenagers who joined com panies under a scheme that gives cash awards to companies for every apprentice taken on above the normal intake of the company.
Numbers of apprentices now stand at the same level as in 1970 at 11,500. Numbers reached their low in 1973 when only 8,700 apprentices joined their companies.
An RTITB spokesman gave credit for the increases in the figures to their Premium Grants scheme of paying employers. Board chairman K.
C. Turner said the industry had shown great faith in its future.
He said the figures had to be seen in the light of the current economic climate so it was gratifying that the industry had been far-sighted enough to recruit the numbers of apprentices necessary to keep up the labour force.
