A bonanza for waste hauliers could be sc-uppered as a report published last week by the Producer Responsibility Industry Group explains how recycling targets for industry can be met.
Peter Hindle, chairman of PRIG, says he wants to see the number
of vehicle movements limited.
The group, representing 28 of the UK's largest companies, wants to see recovery of over half the UK's waste by 2000.
But Hindle says whatever system is implemented to achieve this, there must be real environmental benefits.
The association representing waste hauliers, NAWDAC, says total vehicle movements are likely to increase significantly if the report's recommendations are implemented. Both NAWDAC and the report's authors are calling on the Government to support the recycling targets with legislation.
