A SUGGESTION that the PTEs might club together to build their own buses was made last week by ClIr Stan Yapp, leader of the West Midlands County Council. He said that British Leyland's truck and bus division had "repeatedly" failed to meet orders for the West Midlands PTE's buses.
In a statement to CM this week Mr Fred Lloyd, directorgeneral of the PTE, said that delivery of chassis had been unsatisfactory for some time and "is deteriorating". The PTE was "actively reviewingthe situation, though Mr
Lloyd stressed that there were no complaints about the bodybuilding side of the industry.
ClIr Yapp said that unless British Leyland improved the situation the council would explore alternative possibilities with other PTEs. He said Leyland had recently announced that it could not meet a production deadline for chassis it had agreed two months ago.
A British Leyland spokesman said the company was doing everything in its power to meet demand.
