WAYS and means of reducing rolling noise produced by vehicles is the subject of a report. Rolling noise and vehicle noise, by D. G. Harland of the Transport and Road Research Laboratory. The main factors governing rolling noise, the report concludes, are vehicle speed, whether the road is wet or dry, tyre-tread pattern and road surface type.
Rolling noise, says the report, which is based on work carried out at TRRL and MIRA, limits the possibilities for quiet vehicles. Work on braking force coefficients, however, shows that quieter tyres — an important factor in producing quieter vehicles — need not necessarily reduce adhesion.
