fleet, one with a sloping roof and another with a flat headboard, were pitched against each other at Millbrook Proving Ground to find out what difference a sloping roof made to fuel consumption.
Travelling at a consistent 85km/h, CMtook the first trailer around the two-mile high-speed circuit for five laps from a rolling start. After these five laps were completed we brought the tractor/trailer combination back to the change-over point and went back on the track with the other trailer to complete five laps under the same conditions. We then repeated the whole process, so each trailer performed two sets of laps.
Both trailers were pulled by the same Renault Premium 450 6x2 sleeper cab with a set position on the fifth wheel. Both also ran empty, giving a gross combination weight (GCW) of 15 tonnes, We benchmarked the fuel figures from the tractor and trailers against a second vehicle to allow for variations in weather, wind speed or driving.
For the record, the weather conditions were overcast and temperature varied between three and 10°C. Wind speed varied between eight and 15mph.
