• A claim for £20 to £22 lOs basic rates of pay from URTU and TGWU for drivers in the Sheffield and South Yorkshire area, if met in full would increase haulage costs by at least £15, says the RHA's South Yorkshire area.
In support of their claim, the unions refer to the considerable increase recently awarded to employees of BRS; the introduction shortly of the Road Haulage Wages Order (94) giving a statutory minimum basic of £16 lOs for vehicles of 1-5 tons carrying capacity with no productivity "strings" which will be £1 above the existing South Yorkshire agreement which contains productivity
provisions; and agreements already signed in other parts of the country for a £20 basic.
The request to amend the existing agreement was received last week; South Yorkshire RHA area represents 650 hauliers who employ 4,500 drivers. The RHA says that the increased cost "unfortunately would have•to be passed on to the customer, resulting in a rise in price of raw materials and manufactured goods".
The proposed basic rates of pay, based on a 40hr week are: 1-5 tons carrying capacity vehicle £20; 5-10 tons £20 10s; 10-15 tons £21; 15-18 tons £21 10s; 18-21 tons £22; over 21 tons £22 10s.
