• West Country haulier William C Hockin, who had his Operator's Licence revoked for a second time after losing his appeal against the original revocation, is renewing his appeal.
David Dixon, Western Deputy Traffic Commissioner recently disqualified the company from holding a licence for two years, increasing the disqualification of managing director William Hockin from one to two years. He also disqualified Hock in's wife for a year (CM 3-9 July).
Hockin says he is utterly shocked at the harshness of the decision, and has no Intention of closing down.
"We have not committed any crime but have received the most severe form of punishment for any employer. For someone to have the power to close a 30-year-old business within seven weeks because of management errors is unbelievable," says Hockin. Dixon directed that the revocation and disqualification take place on 30 August to give Hockin chance to dose the business down.
But Hockin is particularly keen to safeguard the jobs of his 30 employees, some of whom have worked for him for over 20 years.
"Our duty to them is to do our best to formulate contingency plans. We've worked very hard to put right anything that wasn't. We're a good upstanding company," says Hockin.
If the Traffic Commissioner refuses the second appeal, Hockin says he will return to the Transport Trilonal.
