Unions campaign on a number of issues. The two main unions in the haulage sector are the United Road Transport Union (URTU) (www.urtu.com) and the transport and general section of Unite (www.tgwu.org.uk) • Both unions are united in campaigning for lower fuel prices • URTU is also campaigning against a European Court of Justice decision in the case of Ruffert v Land Niedersachen which allows employers to pay less than collectively negotiated rates of pay • Unite is currently campaigning against the overloading of containers which can cause vehicles to overturn
A key function of unions is to negotiate on pay. URTU and Unite have together agreed a deal with consenting hauliers in South Yorkshire. Major elements of this are:
• A top rate for drivers of vehicles over 38 tonnes of standard pay £7.75 hour; standard overtime £8.26; weekend overtime £11.35 • A lowest rate of pay for 17-year-olds of: £4.03 (standard pay); £4.31 (standard overtime) and £6.53( weekend overtime) • A subsistence allowance of not less than £28.00 • A night rate premium of up to £1.64 hour • Four weeks', four days paid holiday and four paid rest days
