Another method of auditing your safety performance is to participate in fleet safety benchmarking. Make sure you use an industry specific tool, however, because truckers high mileages can sometimes skew the scores against other drivers.
Benchmarking is a way of comparing your performance. policies and practices with those of the rest of the industry. Most are anonymous, free and offer in-depth feedback. Provided you are
serious about improving performance you can't lose. Insurers will be impressed by a high score, or by the remedial measures you are putting in place following the survey.
Interactive Driving Systems (IDS) research director Dr Will Murray says: "Ifs also a great way of presenting a case to the board." There are a handful of benchmarking sites, though most need more data. Try www.fleetsafetybenchmarking.net, Dr Murray's Off-backed site.
