• The first international railfreight service to be privately owned and managed will begin operating in the autumn.
The service will be operated by Ripon-based Potter Group and London-based Isis, using 20wagon trains owned by an unnamed EC rail operator.
But he is still negotiating with the Department of Transport and Railfreight Distribution to establish charges for using the rail network.
The company says that a "large number" of freight forwarders and manufacturers have expressed interest in the service: existing Potter customers include MAT Transport and Hay's Chemical Distribution.
C The DOT has declined to say how much it will charge private operators to use UK track. But it says 80 organisations, including 30 British Rail management groups, have expressed interest in acquiring franchises after rail privatisation receives Royal Assent next April.
