GERMAN CONSORTIUM Toll Collect will begin installation of its new on-board units (OBU) this week ahead of the relaunch of the lorry road charging scheme in Germany next year.
The move follows weeks of trials of the new units after a series of delays to the start of the controversial LKW-Maut resulted in 20,000 of its existing units being recalled following a software fault (CM 1 January).
The toll operator plans to install 500,000 units in trucks across Germany and neighbouring countries.
All operators who have already registered for the scheme will receive a €250 discount per vehicle fitted with the old equipment, while operators who registered for the original scheme but were not fitted with the units will receive a €50 discount.
A spokesman for Toll Collect says: "We have held six weeks of trials with truck drivers across Germany and every error was monitored and corrected; there is now a 99% success rate for the new equipment. We are on track to reach the 1 January deadline."
