IVECO IS TO LAUNCH an allnew heavy truck range powered by a new family of common-rail diesel engines, including a 16-litre 'big banger; in time for Euro-6.
Iveco CEO Paolo Monferino confirms the current Stralis range will be replaced by a new line-up of "modular and global products" in 2014. However, he insists that Europe's truck buyers "should not have to wait until 2014 before you see a superb vehicle, [so] we will have an intermediate step [based on the Stralis] in 2011/2012.
According to Monferino, the revised Stralis will feature a cab
with clear exterior styling changes and a significantly modified interior, "It will he a huge difference," he says. "In 2014, however, we will have a totally
new vehicle structure. It will be a very big step forward in terms of quality, reliability and durability."
Iveco is also developing a new generation of common-rail diesels for its heavy truck range with the existing Cursor 8 and 10 engines due to he replaced by Cursor 9 and 11 variants, featuring a higher displ acemen t. The displacement of the Euro-6 Cursor 13 will remain the same, although the lowemission Cursor family will also be joined by a circa-16-litre in-tine six, allowing Iveco to compete in the 600h p-plus market.
Sam Burman, senior VP responsible for medium and heavy commercial vehicle platforms, says the new engine range will meet Euro-6 regulations and that the new truck range will feature buildquality levels on a par with the two Scandinavian manufacturers.
• Fiat's decision to de-merge Iveco from its car-making operations will give the truck-maker a clearer business focus and easier opportunities for "...consolidation, mergers or any kind of alliance in the future", Monferino says, although he stresses "right now, we don't have any plans".
Iveco, agricultural and construction plant firm Case New Holland, and the industrial and marine elements of Fiat Powertrain will form a new autonomous company called Fiat Industrial, which will he listed on the Milan stock exchange. The company should he live by the end of the year.
