• Iveco Ford is offering a mid pusher-axle conversion for the 3.8m wheelbase EuroTech 400E38 4x2 tractive unit called the 400E38 TV/P 6x2. The first will go into service with Les Wilson Haulage.
The conversion is carried out by Cleveland-based Iveco Ford dealer North East Truck and Van Engineering Division (NET&V). Using NET&V's established links with Phoenix Truck and Trailer Equipment, Iveco Ford allowed the companies to develop a viable conversion for the EuroTech. IFT's brief demanded the unit to be lighter than existing threeaxle tractors; should give better traction and safety characteristics, under some conditions; the same or better stability, ride and handling than a twin-steer; cost savings for the operator and simplicity of operation, performance and maintenance.
Also, it was essential that the conversion used as many original parts as possible, so that vehicles could be easily maintained by Iveco Ford dealers. Original hubs and disc brakes, as used on EuroTech front axles were included in the parts.
The Phoenix lift-axle provides chassis and propshaft clearance under all conditions, without altering the vehicle ride height with spacers, which could result
in chassis cracking. Pipework, valves and cab controls are integrated in the EuroTech air-suspension system, where air is fitted as standard. Only one extra switch is needed to operate the raise/lower mechanism for the lift axle. The air tank, air driers and spare wheel have to be repositioned in the conversion.
