• Rail freight operator EWS is once again warning that it will have to re-evaluate its crossChannel freight operation if it loses appeals against penalties of more than £500,000, accrued in just three months.
This is in addition to fines of £ 10.5m levied against hauliers since 1 April 2000.
The latest figures have pushed the Freight Transport Association to renew its calls for a review of the way the fines system works—particularly the appeals process. The ETA says operators are victims of desperate people and criminals.
Geoff Dossetter, the ETA's head of external affairs, says: "The UK transport industry continues to be unfairly penalised by the UK government for a situation in which it has limited or no control."
