HUNTINGDON-based Williams Transport is one of the first hauliers to put a longer semitrailer (LST) into operation in a pallet network.
The Wilson Trailers-built double-decker replaces an existing, standard-length double-decker trunking into UPN’s Lichfield hub.
Williams Transport MD Malcolm Shovelton (pictured) says the command-steer 15.65m curtainsider provides capacity for eight more pallets per load, compared with a standard double-decker.
As the company carries a lot of quarter and micro pallets day-to day, however, it has achieved 78 pallets in a single load without weighing out.
“It means that every seven days I’ll be saving the equivalent of an extra trip with a standard double-decker,” says Shovelton. He plans to double-shift the trailer within six months and make two trunks each night rather than one.
The trailer incorporates Wilson Trailers’ Curtain-Clear technology to improve access.
Its sloping roof and curved body claims to improve fuel consumption by as much as 10% compared with a standard double-decker.
Williams Transport covers the PE postcode for UPN.
The firm has a fleet of 62 vehicles and 130 trailers. It has traditionally run full-loads for manufacturers, as well as transporting bulk materials such as recycled paper and green waste.
