NORBERT DENTRESSANGLE (ND) has put the UK’s first 26-tonne GVW hybrid distribution truck into service this week.
The 26-tonne, 3-axle Renault Hybrys Premium is the first of its type in the UK, and is being run in a four-year trial.
The rear-steer hybrid is running out of Aylesford, delivering vending machines, air-conditioning equipment and drinks.
The parallel hybrid system, which means the Euro-5 310hp diesel engine can be used concurrently with the electric motor, is suited for multi-drop work, and incorporates stop-start technology to prevent diesel engine idling.
Attractions for operators in urban areas are silent start-up for night-time deliveries, an improvement of as much as 20% in fuel consumption compared with standard diesel power, and lower emissions.
The complete hybrid system adds 800kg of weight, however, which forced ND to step up from its standard two-axle 18-tonne distribution vehicles to 26 tonnes, to ensure enough working payload.
