AN OPERATOR that introduced a code of practice for its agency drivers two years ago has halved its accident rates.
Weybridge-based Kite Glass runs eight trucks delivering glass products. It brought in the code after being hit with I.:80.000 of insurance claims over two years, half of which involved agency drivers.
Ian McClone, fleet controller
of Kite, urges other operators to consider a similar code: "It means fewer accidents, and drivers realise they can't go into companies, do damage and get away with it".
Kite's code includes a 45-minute break before exceeding 41/2 hours' driving; the wearing of suitable clothes; reporting any accidents or damage incuiTed; and daily vehicle driver checks.
