As with anything regarding vehicle and site safety the Health & Safety Executive is a mine of information. The website is at www.hse.gov.uk and there you will find publications covering all the issues mentioned above, just search under any of our subheadings and it will take you to the necessary documents. Of particular interest is: • Workplace Transport Safety guide • Managing Vehicle Safety at the Workplace — a leaflet for employers The Institute of Road Transport Engineers produces a Guide to 77bber Stability which remains the only industry standard for tipper tilt testing as well as offering practical tipper stability advice. Copies of the guide are available from the IRTE, costing £10.
Contact: 020 7 630 1111. The Safety of loads on vehicles code of practice, available from the Department for Transport is another practical and useful guide. Although there isn't a specific section dealing with tippers, there's sufficient in the general information section to inform tipper operators. See www.dft.gov.uk then search under 'safe loads on vehicles'. In addition we also found the Energy Networks Association useful for advice on the hazards of overhead power lines. See www.energynetworks.org
