Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

DRIVERS EMPLOYED by smaller hauliers are enjoying bigger pay rises than elsewhere in the industry.

A survey of 123 companies employing more than 31,000 people shows average hourly pay for Class C+E drivers is .0.52, up 6.8% on last year. Average pay for Class C drivers is 0.14/hr, with van drivers on £6.57/hr.

The highest pay settlement recorded in the joint report by Incomes Data Services (IDS) and the Road Haulage Association was 18%. The £1 rise, to i6.50/hr. was awarded by Stoke-on-Trent-based Acorn GDS, a small furniture transport and shipping company.

The report, Pay and Conditions in Road Transport and Distribution 2005/06, says most hauliers awarding increases of 8% or more employed less than 65 people.

"The trend for smaller employers to award higher pay rises continues from previous years, as these companies usually have lower pay and benefits than larger hauliers which can cause recruitment and retention problems," it adds.

More than a third of respondents complained of extra administration as a result of the Working Time Directive.

The 50-page report costs I160 to non-IDS members.
