THE new automatic transmission system for commercial vehicles of up to 20 tonnes gvw developed by DAF (CM exClusive last week) is to be made at a new factory in Tilburg, Holland. It is based on the well proven operating principle of the belt-drive Variomatic transmisison fitted to DAF (now Volvo) light vans and cars, and is called the Transmatic.
To take the heavier transMission loads, this system uses a steel chain, rather than rubber belts, to link the variable vee-pufleys.
The vee-pulleys are operated by a hydraulic system, which alters their effective diameters, thus enabling infinite variable gear ratios and a smooth takeup of power to be obtained. Full engine braking is retained and creep, associated with most automatic transmissions, has been eliminated.
The hydraulic operating systems are contained in the gearbox housing and the fluid used doubles as the lubricant, Maintenance is limited to checking the oil level.
DAF claims that the life of the new transmission is at least the same as a conventional gearbox, as the loads within the transmission are taken over quite large surface areas. They say the transmission is quieter and more efficient than most existing automatic boxes.
