I see that a grading scheme for " wreckers " is being proposed by Wreckers International, of Hertford, with the object of setting up a national association of recovery operators with minimum skills, equipment and crew standards. It will involve four grades of lift/tow ability, and if it does nothing else it might get some sense into definition of what " lift " and " tow " actually mean in recovery terms.
Wreckers' md, Wm. C. Jackson, defines the most contentious term "rated lift" as "a figure that defines maximum lift • and tow within makers' chassis rear axle limit," and he defines "lift and tow" as "to lift front or rear of a casualty and drive on public roads within known laws."
