MOST of the haulage firms Operating depots in the Penrith area of Cumbria are doing so illegally.
That is the conclusion of a report prepared for Eden District Council's planning committee. It shows that of the 114 operators in the district only 20 have planning permission for their premises.
The report highlights the many problems caused by the lack of proper facilities for hauliers in the area. For example there had been a "dramatic increase" in night lorry-parking over the past five years.
Cllr A. Dixon complained of the number of lorries and trailers left in the town over the weekend and said that the town was being used as a truck "dump."
A number of proposals were put forward by the report. They included constructing a lorry park as quickly as possible; making land available to haulage firms; giving permission for hauliers •to establish depots in some of the larger villages; action against firms operating on unsuitable sites without planning permission; and possibly regulating heavy vehicles passing through Penrith.
