THE long wait for the Young Driver Scheme to come into operation could soon be over. The scheme—for so long a hot potato within the industry— has been designed to provide training leading to a career as an HGV driver.
Mr E. L. Williams, chairman of the RHA's education and Training Committee, told CM this week that he "confidently expected the necessary legislation to come into force by November 19."
Open to both men and women from the age of 16, the scheme will be administered by a broadly-based committee on which both the RHA, the FTA and RTITB will have representation.
It will mean that an employer must apply to be registered before any training can take place. A representative of the committee will make inspection visits to ensure that standards are kept up.
A company registration fee of £25 is required to cover general administration and inspection costs. Companies with less than 25 HGV drivers will pay £15.
