• A Walsall driver whose truck with faulty brakes ran down a hill out of control eventually toppling on to a car killing a man, has been jailed for 30 months.
Scientist Dr David Cooke was killed instantly when the truck driven by Balvinder Kang careered down a one-in-ten hill in the Cotswolds landing on his car, crushing it to a height of just two feet. Kang pleaded guilty to causing the death of Cooke in May 1995, when he appeared at Gloucester Crown Court last week.
Tests on the vehicle showed that at the time of the accident the trailer's brakes were working to 7% efficiency. An examination of Kang's tachograph showed his speed at the top of the hill was 51rnph—the limit for a truck on that road is 40.
