• Trailer rental specialist TIP Europe has stepped up its attack on the UK short-term truck and van hire market by snapping up Smith Self Drive (SSD) which has 16 depots and 7,000 trucks, vans and cars.
TIP claims to have the largest number of long-term trailers for hire across across Europe. It also owns Manchester-based Key Leasing which launched Key Truck Rental in Glasgow and Manchester nine months ago.
TIP is not saying if Key Truck Rental will be absorbed into SSD, which is to keep its name: Key Truck Rental has 100 vehicles.
Barry DeSantis, managing director of TIP Europe, says the company is making a "significant investment" to meet growing demand in the short term leasing market. "SSD is highly complementary to our Key Leasing business," he adds. "We will expand this business within the UK and across Europe."
