GOODYEAR has purchased a 500-acre proving ground at Mireval near Montpellier in southern France.
Its 3.3km (2.1 mile) and 2.2km (1.3 mile) tracks with various gradients and corners will be used for car, light and heavy truck tyre testing.
Goodyear's International Technical Centre in Luxembourg already has a small track, but unlike the Mireval site will not allow high-speed testing in rela tively high ambient temperatures.
The Mireval track was built in 1972 as a motor racing circuit. Its sale price to Goodyear has not been made public.
The American tyre company's main test facility is a 7,200 acre site at San Angelo, Texas.
