VOLKSWAGEN'S unique Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) automated transmission is set to make its first appearance in a light commercial. It will feature in a new derivative of the Caddy which begins production next month, mated to the 103hp 1.9TDI engine.
The DSG consists of two separate gear sets: one for odd numbered gears and another for evens. A fastoperating concentric clutch unit selects which shaft provides the drive, which has already been pre-selected electronically. It combines an ultra-quick automatic shift with manual over-ride and mechanical efficiency similar to a conventional manual gearbox.
Although pricing of the DSG option has not yet been confirmed. it is expected to be similar to the £1,127 (ex-VAT) premium charged on the Golf car.
