• by Galin Barnett The four-year competition to choose the British Army's next generation of heavy equipment transport concluded with preferred bidder status being awarded to the Fasttrax Consortium led by Brown and Root, with hardware from Oshkosh and King Trailers.
The 20-year PFI contract is worth more than .000m; the first vehicles are due to enter service next year. In the final stage of the competition the Fasttrax entry beat off its nearest rival—a consortium including MAN, Andover Trailers and Goldhofer Trailers.
The outrt is drawn by a European-compliant version of the Oshkosh M1070 8x8 tractor, a well-proven design with more than 1,600 examples in service with the US Army. It is powered by a 12-litre, 500hp Detroit Diesel VB twostroke diesel driving Rockwell axles through a five-speed Allison transmission and two-speed transfer box.
The GTS100 trailer is a purpose-built design by King Trailers of Market Harborough; it rides on seven hydraulically suspended steering axles.
The primary role of the 1135tonne GCW artic will be to transport main battle tanks, particularly the Vickers Challenger 2, as well as other heavy equipment up to 72 tonnes. The initiaf order is for 92 outfits with an option for a fur ther 28.
