The level of protection required on a vehicle is determined by its ADR classification.
When a vehicle is carrying explosives or inflammable liquids avoiding sparks is a really good idea. Prerequisites include pro tected wiring, a main switch to cut off all electrical power and exhaust shields; cab trim materials must have a burn rate of less than 100mm/min.
Speed limiters and ABS are required on most classes of ADIR vehicle, and they must be able to maintain a steady speed of 30km/h on a 6km downhill gradient of 7% without resort to their service brakes.
Diesel-fuelled cab heaters must be removable and must not have timer-operated automatic start-up controls.
