• A device which can alert a truck driver to the possibility of a tyre blow Out will be available soon from Buxton-based Otter Controls.
The temperature and pressure sensor will fit any tyre on the market, says Otter, which expects to sell the product from around £200, although fitting out a large HGV could cost more.
The inventor of the sensor is Scotsman Nigel Buchanan, who is a past finalist in the Prince of Wales Awards for Innovation on the TV programme Tomorrow's World, The sensor is smaller than a spark plug and incorporates a standard tyre valve, It transmits a radio pulse which is picked up by an ariel under each wheel-arch and monitored by a dashboard display.
A warning system is triggered if the temperature or pressure fall below a pre-set limit.
