• The principle of subsidizing bus services from the rates has been accepted by the Sheffield Labour group controlling the City Council, although by how much has yet to be decided.
At present it is estimated that by the end of the financial year in March 1972 the transport department will show a loss of more than £700,000. Transport committee chairman CU R. Thwaites said on Tuesday that there were three ways of applying a subsidy: £350,000 would cover the. unpaid half of children's concessionary fares; an extra £150,000 could be paid above the present £380,000 rates contribution for free fares for pensioners; or a rates contribution could be made towards the £565,000 annual loss on non-remunerative services.
