• Salary increases for managers and directors in the distribution industry far outstripped most other professions last year, according to a survey conducted by the British Institute of Management.
Chief executives of distribution companies enjoyed average total annual earnings of £78,218 in the year to January — up an average of 47.6%. Other directors gained an extra 39%, to £41,039, and senior function chiefs' pay rose nearly 29% to £36,750. Department managers earned an extra 22%, at £26,590. However, function chiefs suffered a drop of around 6% to £31,145.
Their employees were not as well rewarded. The BIM says the UK workforce as a whole won average increases of 8%, but many truck drivers' wages rose by only 3%.
