• Truck sales have hit their lowest level in over 10 years.
The July edition of Glass's Guide says that 102,000 new trucks have been registered so far this year. This is the lowest number since 1981, when halfyear figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders showed 107,500 new commercial vehicles on the road.
The figures "make depressing reading", says Glass's Guide "Businesses and the public are very cautious about any capital investment."
And a survey by Barclays Mercantile has shown that only 28% of businesses plan to increase investment in commercial vehicles in the second half of the year: 51% plan to maintain current levels.
