• I'm afraid I can't feel too sorry for the haulier jailed for running without a tax disc (CM 18-24 June).
As a law abiding owner-operator I never break the rules — whether it comes to speeding, drivers' hours or VED payment. I believe that only if professional drivers seriously try to attain these standards will the road transport industry gain the respect from the public and police that it so desperately needs.
Every offence the industry commits is another piece of ammunition for use by the anti-truck brigade.
If we don't all start behaving as we should an angry public will force the Government to legislate us out of business — and that would be a hard sentence indeed.
