waste tankers to its rental fleet in response to the water companies' increasing use of contract-hire vehicles for shifting large volumes of sludge and non-hazArdous waste.
Half the new purchases are Fruehauf semi-trailers; the rest are rigids, bodied mainly by Somerset-based Barvick Engineering with two by Thompson Carmichael.
The 26,0001it tanker trailers have Drum Mistral rotary blowers/exhausters with acoustically housed Perkins power units. They are built for operation at 38,40 or 44 tonnes GCW. The 20,0001it rigids are on a mix of Leyland Daf, MAN and Mercedes-Benz 8x4 chassis. They feature Drum pressure and vacuum loading and discharge equipment.
Instead of traditional 7.0mmthick mild steel, TIP has opted for 4.0mm 316 stainless steel in the barrels, valves and plumbing.
"Stainless steel costs a bit more," says TIP's vacuum tanker rental fleet manager Ian Bolton, "but it's more abrasionresistant, lighter and does not require any additional painting and finishing. Like-for-like, there's very little to choose between them on cost"
