SCOTLAND Yard and London Broadcasting made history last week. On Wednesday at 6.30am this old bird was heading for the office listening as usual for the traffic reports. Imagine my reaction to the news that a 40-ton lorry had overturned on the Sidcup by-pass at Crittalls Corner. "A heavy indivisible load," I thought. At 6.55am the news was repeated and expanded; the vehicle was a 40-ton lorry carrying apples.
So I phoned up: where had LBC got the news?
From The Yard.
How could they tell without weighing it that it was 40 tons?
Silence — then Why the query?
There are no 40-ton vehicles in the UK carrying apples. Were they aware that their emotive language cause all sorts of strange people to join the anti-lorry brigade?
No, they were not.
Well, would they in future, use the term heavy goods vehicle?
They will.
Now what about you taking up the cudgels and going after these people who damage your image because they just don't know what it's all about!
