from the TRRL • The Transport and Road Research Laboratory has developed an on-board weighing system based on the 'Shear' principle which is expected to prove more accurate and reliable than existing systems.
In 1985 the Laboratory carried out trials on three commercially available systems fitted to five vehicles in service for six months.
Even under ideal conditions they only achieved their target accuracy of ±2% for individual axle weights less than 40% of the time.
A report (Trials of three on board weighing systems for heavy goods vehicles by WH Newton) called for a performance specification giving an accuracy of ± 0.1 tonnes for the sum of the vehicles' axle weights. The report on the new system is expected by the autumn.
