• Increased VED bills coupled with hefty cuts in rural subsidies are endangering rural routes in the North East, warns Eric Hutchinson, chairman and managing director of newlyprivatised Busways.
"Fortunately we operate very few rural services but those we do run are very marginal," he says. "We have only been able to keep them going as long as we have by novel scheduling and specific wage agreements. If things get even tighter we will have to review our rural commitment very carefully, which upsets me because it is the passenger who will suffer."
