IN Two London buses were stopped by the police this week for not displaying road fund licences. The vehicles were running on route 188 for private operator Bexleybus on behalf of London Regional Transport. They were nabbed in a joint crackdown in Deptford by police and Department of Transport officials.
Passengers on the first bus were delayed for 10 minutes during the morning rush hour. "Would this have happened when the GLC ran London transport?" asked an angry commuter LRT refused to comment on the incident but Bexleybus general manager Alan Mechem blames thieves who he claims are stealing his tax discs for display in their own vehicles: "I can assure you that all our vehicles are fully licenced and provided with a tax disc. If the
bus is not displaying one, then it has been stolen," he says. "I am surprised that the police delayed passengers by stopping the bus; they could have called up later. We do try to check each bus before it goes out, but some do slip through."
