• Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher has joined the campaign to remove European barriers to road haulage.
Launching the Conservative manifesto for next month's European elections, Thatcher stressed the importance of permitting cabotage throughout the Community: "We want lorries to be able to pick up business right across Europe," she said. The manifesto adds: "We intend to secure further liberalisation of all other transport markets, notably bus and coach services between community countries."
