• Volvo enjoyed a 27% rise in truck sales during the first quarter of 1989 — up from £438m to 2556m. The company says that its order backlog for trucks remains "very strong". In the first quarter it delivered 14,300 trucks, compared with 12,700 in 1988.
There was a 4% rise in Volvo bus sales — up from £75.6m to .278.7m -and the company says that order books were fuller now than in 1988.
Overall Volvo's firstquarter operating profit was up 30% to £186.3m. o Volvo has signed a cooperation agreement with South Korean company Daewoo for the import of Volvo trucks into the booming South Korean market. The deal also includes a plan to manufacture Volvo trucks in South Korea where 8,000 heavy trucks were sold last year.
