• The prospect of disruptions to all P&O European Ferries services looms this week as ships officers join seamen in considering industrial action against the company.
Seamen's union the Rail Maritime and Transport Union confirms it has balloted members at Felixstowe and Cairnryan for a series of 48-hour stoppages. The result is expected on 2 December. And the National Union of Marine Aviation and Shipping Transport Officers says action cannot be ruled out The move follows a proposal to increase working time from the New Year for on-board staff working out of P&O ports at Dover, Portsmouth, Felixstowiand Cairnryan, say the unions.
Chairman of the P&O's joint officers liaison committee at Felixstowe David Barker says on-board safety standards would suffer under the proposals.
