STEPHEN JAKOB I, the director of pressure group FairaialsAbroad, has flown to France to meet Paul Watson. the British haulier bailed there for alleged drug smuggling.
Jakobi is concerned that Watson has not been bailed to the UK and will have to remain in France "indefinitely" until the authorities decide whether to charge him:"The magistrates appear to believe Paul is innocent so it's just a matter of waiting to see if he will be released.
Watson was released on conditional bail last June after nine months in jail awaiting trial. He must stay in France until the French courts decide whether to pursue his case.
Watson's partner Sarah Wilson says: "We have applied again for Paul to be bailed to the UK. It would be the best Christmas present ever if they allow him to come home. When he is released we plan to launch a charity to help drivers who are imprisoned abroad."
It is 15 months since Watson was stopped on the Al in Lille by French Customs who found a tonne of cannabis in his load of pottery (CM 4 December 2003).
