CIMC was founded in January 1980 and started production two years later. In 1994 it was listed on the Shenzen stock exchange and the following year evolved into a group, manufacturing containers, trailers, tankers and airport equipment.
Today CIMC has over 50 subsidiaries with 50,000 staff worldwide and assets of 22.92bn Chinese yuan (11.11bn net) around £1.5bn. As well as producing containers, it builds dry freight vans and tankers including ISO tank-taners, and road-going and storage tankers for a range of cargoes such as chemical, petroleum, beverages and other food products.
A recent innovation is airport equipment for global markets including large-scale logistical cargo-handling systems, boarding bridges for A380s at CDG Airport Paris, and others for large passenger ships.
