General specification
The second user of a van is likely to be a self-employed tradesperson or small businessman, for whom specification and power are important. Light vans should have a side loading door, plenty of power and clean panels for re-branding; they should be in a standard factory finish, A good specification for driver entertainment and comfort is desirable, with features such as air-con.
Hatchbacks
Hatchback vans are popular. They are perfect for the second user who does not need to carry huge loads, such as pizza delivery firms, security guards or couriers, as they are generally cheap to run, comfortable and compact enough to park on the drive. Models in particular demand include the Peugeot 206, the Renault Clio, Corsa and Fiesta vans. However they can be mileage-sensitive and condition is important so it's worth spending money on removing paintwork scuffs or fixing trim damage.
SWB panel vans
Remarketing panel vans require a lot more thought than just taking vehicles out of service and selling them. In this sector prospective buyers like power in the shape of a big engine, a good load capacity, usability and versatility. Condition is usually more important than age: high mileage is a turn-off.
MWB/LWB vans
Unless a MWB/LWB van is really earning its keep perhaps in courier delivery, window replacement or carpet fitting many used buyers will opt for the smaller version. making this a limited market compared with other van sectors. With many of these vehicles going into 24/7 delivery work a powerful and reliable engine is top of many buyers' lists, as is a full service history. Versatility is also important for the second user, so a side loading door is necessary and two are preferable. Driver comforts are also important, as is sat-nay, because these vehicles tend to do long distances.
Pickups The pickup market has grown in recent years and remain hugely popular in the used market. As these vehicles are often used as the family car at weekends, double cabs are favoured — although the few single cabs around find a ready market. Specification is important as basic models do not attract as many buyers. Leather trim, air-con and CD player are musts. Colour is key as is condition. White looks too utilitarian, but a pickup in black, silver, red or blue could make significantly more money when sold on, especially if the vehicle has been properly maintained.
