EARLIER THIS year CM reported that the number of LGV drivers had nosedived.
After years of dreaming about it, I started lessons in LGV Class 2 and am pleased to say I passed in June. However, I now know why there are so many people reluctant to train.
Apart from the cost of the lessons (£2,500 from start to finish), no one is prepared to give newly qualified drivers a chance. I have a folder full of applications, and they either don’t bother to answer or say I don’t have any experience. I’m not 18 any more – I am fast approaching 42, I’ve had my car licence for 24 years, motorcycle licence for nine years, no penalty points and a sensible head on my shoulders.
I have offered to do occasional overnights (but not full tramping), weekends – I don’t care, I just want a job!
So if more employers stop pushing new drivers away, you may have more people willing to train! Neil Hammerton
